The Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I (1459 – 1519) was one of the greatest musical patrons of the Renaissance, attracting composers, singers and instrumentalists from all over Europe to his court at Innsbruck.  This programme explores this rich musical heritage, contrasting courtly songs by Maximilian’s composers Heinrich Isaac and Ludwig Senfl with settings of rumbustious and haunting popular songs.  Musica Antiqua of London is one of the world’s leading groups specialising in Renaissance secular music.  It will be using varied combinations of Renaissance viols and recorders in tonight’s programme.
