Steven Devine’s concerts of J.S. Bach’s music, using the chamber groups those composer originally wrote for, are a revelation, akin to being surprised by a newly cleaned great painting. In this instalment he contrasts the familiar – the great suite or ouverture in B minor for flute and strings – with some rarities, including the superb oboe d’amore concerto, the original version of a harpsichord concerto. The fascinating triple concerto, a return to the scoring of Brandenburg no. 5, is also Bach’s reworking of his own music – in this case two virtuoso keyboard pieces.
Steven Devine is one of the world’s leading early music specialists, celebrated as a soloist as well as a director of leading ensembles here and abroad.
