- Psalmody
- John Jenkins Consort
- Essex Baroque Orchestra
- directed by Peter Holman
A musical voyage of discovery! Spanish Renaissance composers such as Victoria and Morales are often sung by English choirs, but the musical riches from Spain’s court chapels and cathedrals a century later are still virtually unknown. In this concert we bring together masterpieces by Francisco Valls of Barcelona Cathedral (the Spanish Purcell) and José de Nebra (the Spanish Handel), with music by their contemporaries.
The main work is Nebra’s great Requiem (1758), performed in Madrid in memory of Queen Maria Barbara – Domenico Scarlatti’s pupil. Prepare to be astonished by expressive solos contrasted with sumptuous and dramatic concerted works for multiple soloists, divided choirs, flutes and strings, underpinned by a rich continuo section including a Baroque harp and two organs.
