Thomas Linley, exact contemporary and friend of Mozart, is the great lost hope of English music; he drowned in an ornamental boating lake aged twenty-two. This programme offers a cross-section of his remarkable music, from his earliest major work, the grand anthem ‘Let God Arise’, written for the Three Choirs Festival, to his masterpiece, the short oratorio The Song of Moses, composed only a few months before his death, which will be receiving its first concert performance since 1777. The programme also includes the extraordinary storm chorus for Shakespeare’s The Tempest and the overture to The Duenna, a comedy by his brother-in-law Richard Brinsley Sheridan.
Peter Holman is renowned for his pioneering performances and recordings of English music, and conducted the acclaimed first recording of The Song of Moses.
