In his famous memorandum to the town council in Leipzig in August 1730 J.S.Bach described to the Dresden court musical establishment of Augustus II ‘the Strong’, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, as ‘exquisite and excellent to hear’. Three years later he dedicated the Kyrie and Gloria of what eventually became his Mass in B minor to his successor, August III.
Baroque Dresden was famous for its architecture and the visual arts, but it was also important for music. Court composers such as Johann David Heinichen, Johann Dismass Zelenka and Johann Georg Pisendel looked to Italy for their musical style, and in particular to Antonio Vivaldi, who wrote a number of works for Dresden.
Philippa Hyde and Steven Devine perform regularly for the Suffolk Villages Festival; Huw Daniel makes a welcome return after his debut at last year’s supper concert. He has quickly made his mark in the early music field, playing with many Baroque orchestras and ensembles, here and abroad.
